Portoferraio ItalyIt is the principal town of the island with 11.500 inhabitants. Other suburbs of the town are: San Giovanni, Schiopparello, Magazzini, Carpani, Bagnaia, San Martino, La Biodola. The island of Montecristo belongs to this administration. The Palazzina dei Mulini is a national monument, situated between Forte Stella and Forte Falcone, which are the two medicean fortresses of Portoferraio. It was the official residence of Napoleon and his sister Paolina. The museum houses several relics and from the garden you can enjoy a beautiful panorama on the Tyrrhenian sea. The Villa of S. Martino, at 5 km from Portoferraio, was Napoleon's summer dwelling. Worth seeing are the Egyptian Hall and the Demidoff Gallery.
