Timeless charm; age-old images of simplicity, peace, serenity and wellbeing. This is the idea suggested by a postcard from the spa resorts of Abano and Montegrotto. All year round, life among the Euganean Hills seems to pass unchanged and unchangeable, as though time had stopped among the hermitages and the inaccessible old castles. But the roots of this charm go even deeper into the past: the Thermae were indeed the cradle of the local civilization, the old protagonists of a form of tourism that was not crowded, though it was inspired and stimulated by health purposes which today are perfectly integrated in the modern concept of leisure. In the sphere of spa treatment, the Euganean area can teach the world the most important concepts of the relationship between health and holidays. These are lessons that come from afar: the therapeutic properties of the area were already known in Venetic times, renowned under the Romans, appreciated and structurally restored after the fall of the great empire and finally awarded with the first scientific acknowledgement in the fourteenth century. A boost to spa activity was given jointly by the doctor and philosopher, Pietro D'Abano (1250-1310) and, subsequently, by the Dondi dall'Orologio family.
